Bad Checks
Writing bad check in California and other
states has many undesirable consquences. Every year, Los
Angeles County merchants lose millions of dollars to bad check
writers. In the past, their only options have been to contract
with costly collection agencies or to bring suit in civil court
in an effort to get restitution. The District Attorney Bad
Check Restitution Program has changed that.
The District Attorney Bad Check Restitution
Program
This recently reorganized program returned
over $2,627,000 in restitution to victims in 2000 - at
absolutely no cost to the victims or taxpayers.
What does The District Attorney Bad Check
Restitution Program offer?
The Bad Check Restitution Program offers
first time bad check offenders an opportunity to make
restitution without compiling a criminal record. By attending a
mandatory eight-hour intervention class designed to address the
underlying behavioral causes of bad check activity, and by
paying all program fees, the check writer can avoid criminal
prosecution.
However, if they fail to make restitution or
complete the program, their cases are quickly reviewed for
possible criminal filing. Upon conviction, bad check writers
may face up to a year in county jailor a longer sentence in
state prison, plus a fine and payment of full restitution.
Who fund the Bad Check Restitution
Program?
The Bad Check Restitution Program, fully
funded through fees paid by bad check writers, is a partnership
between the District Attorney office and the local
business community. Call1-800-842-0733 and let the District
